chrysalitron: (Turk-n-JD 4evah!)

Scrubs is back! Yay! And there was a Rowdy sighting, so all is right with the world.

I have to say, though....as much as I love Scrubs, that whole gimmick in the first episode, looking through the new intern's eyes? I could have done without it. It just seemed sort of stupid. We saw JD and company as interns, so it's not like we needed to see it again. Who knows, though, maybe it was just the whole camera trick that bugged me. If it was a way to introduce the character of Keith, then they should have foregone the gimmicks and just introduced him. I was more interested in him in the second episode, when we actually got to see him, as opposed to being distracted by the camera work.

I'm disappointed that Elliott's job ended so soon. I wondered at the end of last season how the new job would work out and kind of figured that she'd be back at Sacred Heart soon enough. (Okay, so maybe she hasn't gotten her old job back yet, but give it time). But I thought the way they did it worked. It was funny to imagine Elliott working at one hospital and spending all of her time at the other one.

Whenever someone asks me who my favorite Scrubs character is, I usually say Cox, but honestly, I think it might very well be Jordan. I just love her to death. And I loved that Turk wanted to protect her. I'm not sure how it's going to work, Jordan being friends with everyone, because part of the appeal of Jordan is that everyone is scared of her. But we'll see how it goes.

Highlights that I can think of......JD mastering Turkspeak, the horse hospital where they just carry around rifles, and Cox informing JD that his urinalysis showed that he was on the pill. Bwah! Still not sure where I stand on "Turk and Carla have a baby" (especially since it took Turk all of two seconds to change his mind - I know it's a sitcom, but really) but I must say, I love Carla's haircut.

From the previews, I had the feeling this episode was going to consist of blatant hints that Olivia's biological clock is ticking itself silly. But I guess it wasn't all that bad, save for that whole "I hope I have a son just like you" bit. As much as I want to see a victim bonding with, say, Munch or Fin, it made sense that it was Olivia. Nathan's mother was all he had. It didn't seem like there were any male figures in his life, and the few men he did see were usually paying his mother for sex. So obviously, he would gravitate towards a woman instead of to men.

This episode was a little bit better in regards to shoving six storylines into one episode. Sure, it was still full, but nowhere near like the ones we've been seeing.

As far as the quality of the content.....I felt sorry for Nathan, but I had a hard time buying the whole "gun violence" thing. I wanted him to get off, because Carthidge was scum and I couldn't really blame Nathan for shooting him. And yeah, I'm sure watching his mother be murdered had a lot to do with his actions. But, I don't know, I guess it's just sketchy. In that case, it seems like you could go either way. Yes, he witnessed gun violence - but yes, he hated the man who killed his mother. So how do you determine that it was the gun violence, as opposed to the hatred, that led to him committing murder? And even if you determine that it was his hatred for Carthidge that spurred him on, that hatred came about because of the gun violence....so again, which way do you go? It's hard to say.

I honestly do lean towards the prosecution's side, though. Nathan's case was extreme, but when they start taking kids and saying "Well, he played a violent video game, so that's why he killed", that's where I personally draw the line. I'm sure the video game had some effect on that child, but there are a lot of people in this world who play violent video games, or listen to violent music, or watch violent movies. And they don't commit murder. It just feels like a fallback to me. Any excuse to not show responsibility for one's actions.

That's how it felt with Nathan. Like Annie Potts was leaning on that because she knew she couldn't get him off any other way. But in that case, I understood why she was going there. I didn't like it much, but I suppose witnessing real gun violence is much different than playing an imaginary game. And it did seem like they were being harsh on Nathan. Not that he should just get a slap on the wrist, but still. He was a minor, his mother was just murdered in front of his eyes....it did feel like they could have gone a bit easier on him and were choosing not to. Maybe it's because he could have put other people in danger when he went after Carthidge. Maybe it's because he put thought into getting the gun and showing up at the Salvation office, as opposed to acting out blindly. I don't know.

Casey was a total badass in this one. I think we should have more adventures with Casey, Judge Donnelly, and Annie Potts' character. My favorite moment was the whole courtroom comeuppance, with Annie Potts calling for a mistrial and all the dominoes just falling into place after that. I loved that the lawyer knew he'd been had, but since he was the one who'd gotten the ball rolling, he couldn't do anything about it. Heh.

I adore Judith Light's character. I hope Donnelly never, ever leaves. The constant "Bitch, please" look sends me into fits whenever she makes an appearance. I said Casey was a badass, but she could never be Judge Donnelly. Not even the revered Alex-freakin'-Cabot can touch her.

Gordon Clapp seems like he is making a run at all of my television shows, now that NYPD Blue is over. He can definitely play the smarmy guy, but I still think of Medavoy and want to hug him. I think that works for him, though. He's got this really....jovial, happy way about him. So when he plays someone like Carthidge, who is so horrible and sick, that makes it even worse. Because he seems like the kind of guy you can trust, the kind of guy who would do anything to help you.

It's good to see him out and about, though. He's obviously keeping busy since Blue ended. Everyone else seems to be lying fairly low. Mark-Paul Gosselaar is on Commander In Chief, but I can't watch it since last time I checked, it interferes with another one of my shows. (And god knows I'm going to be taping enough shows soon enough - thanks, must-see NBC Thursdays!) I think I heard that Jacqueline Obradors is on Freddie. Bonnie Sommerville was on Kitchen Confidential. But other than that, I haven't heard anything really. Well - I heard that Henry Simmons' girlfriend dumped him because he's apparently bisexual (!!!) but, yeah. That's it.

Next week: I'm not sure, but I think this is the one where ME Warner gets a chance to shine. That's what I'm hearing, anyway - I'm gonna be pissed if it turns out she has, like, one scene and that's it.
