Rant rant ranty mcrantpants.
Oct. 4th, 2005 11:16 pmOh, for fuck's sake. Are we really going to have to sit through this every single season until they give Mariska Hargitay another Emmy? No, seriously. Because I am not quite sure I can handle much more of this.
I think my annoyance with this episode began almost immediately. (Okay, honestly - my annoyance began with those tinkling, melodramatic promos). Am I really supposed to believe that Olivia Benson is the only detective in all of the land who could have dealt with this? Nobody else was available anywhere that could talk to this girl? They weren't even sure at that point that she had been sexually abused, so it wasn't like they said "Hey, I bet this girl has been molested! Let's get SVU in on this!"
Haven't we already seen the whole "Olivia gets pulled away from date in order to work on Very Important Case" a few times now? What, we wanted to make sure Mariska looked pretty for her possible (so they're hoping) Emmy nomination? That's so blatantly transparent, and it was every other time they tried it, too.
Personally, I'm kind of disappointed that Olivia was right in every single thing she said or did. For once, I'd love for her (or Stabler, for that matter) to get up on their self-righteous, pretentious pony, and for them to turn out flat wrong. Every single time, Cragen is made to look like the cynical buffoon because he doesn't "feel" the cases the way Our Favorite Detectives do. What was so wrong with Cragen saying no to Olivia? Why should he put a hundred men on the case when all signs indicated that it was a trick? The only "proof" he had that anything was amiss was Olivia's gut feeling. Are we really supposed to be looking down our noses at him for not jumping to when she insists on it? I hardly think so. Yet that's how it feels. Like we're supposed to just discount Cragen because after all, he just doesn't "know" these things the way Elliot or Olivia do. And personally, I'm a little sick of that. How about an episode where Cragen is the one in the right? Hell, how about an episode that is All About Cragen? That would be nice.
And yes, on that note - how about All About Munch? All About Fin? All About Casey? All About Anyone Who Isn't Elliot Or Olivia? At this point, I'll even take an episode about Ryan The Cute CSU Guy. Because at least it will be different.
(A random observation: Munch was looking sharp tonight. Go, Munchkins!)
Back to the drama queen of the hour......all signs seem to indicate that they will eventually knock Olivia up this season. Unfortunately, with this show's track record (Stabler's Rage, anyone?), we'll be knocked over the head with it all season and find out in the finale that she's pregnant. And then all of next season will revolve around The Incubation of the Bentus. *sigh*
Am I the only one who has noticed that, whenever one of Our Favorite Detectives has a Very Special Episode, the other one seems to get conveniently shipped off? What, are they afraid that if Meloni makes an appearance, Miska's chances for an Emmy will decrease? It just seems odd that every single time that something is happening, the partner of the detective in question is out of commission. Are they afraid that, now that Stabler is divorced (or whatever), if he shares any scenes of depth with Olivia, the fans will start squealing about a possible romance? If that's it, I'm afraid that ship has already sailed. It set off as soon as the word "separation" was mentioned.
ETA: And for real, the dialogue? It sounded bad enough in the promos, but I figured it was just editing that made it look so cheesy. Sadly, I was wrong. "As long as you're on this phone, I am with you!" I really had to fight the urge to scream out "You had me at hello, Maria!" God.
Next week: Stabler's Rage: The Finale? God, let's hope so. If I'm still sitting here next year writing about Elliot's anger and how it's the same old shit, I think I might cry.

Date: 2005-10-05 03:26 am (UTC)Didn't see the ep--I was watching Close to Home for the Christian Kane factor--but it sounds like I didn't miss much.

Date: 2005-10-05 03:32 am (UTC)Yeah, unless you really needed a dose of Olivia getting emotionally invested in a case, you didn't miss a lot. Maybe I went in with a bias, because I'm beyond tired of Olivia or Elliot being the focus and everyone else treated like extras. I don't know. From what everyone else is saying, it was "the best episode ever". But it just didn't do it for me.
How was Close To Home? Any good?

Date: 2005-10-05 03:38 am (UTC)But anyway... CtH was okay. Another procedural. Not spectacular. The case was really, really sad. Jennifer Finnegan was good, especially since I wasn't crazy about her on Crossing Jordan. But seriously, I'm mostly watching for Christian Kane. :P

Date: 2005-10-05 03:55 am (UTC)Yeah, I can understand that. I think it helped matters that by the time I watched SVU regularly, Casey was already in place. By the time I saw the episode with her as the rapist, it was just kind of a novelty or weird quirk.
But seriously, I'm mostly watching for Christian Kane. :P
LOL - okay, I totally get that. I think the main reason I watched the last couple of seasons of NYPD Blue was for Mark-Paul Gosselaar, sooooo....yeah. *blush*
